Communities Living Sustainably Initiative

Up to £1 million could be available to Exeter for a 5-year project to help local communities protect themselves against the effects of climate change.

Exeter Council for Voluntary Services (CVS) is pulling together partners from the public, commercial and voluntary sectors for an ambitious bid to a BIG Lottery Fund initiative to help communities – particularly deprived communities – to become more resilient to the effects of climate change. If successful, the bid to the Communities Living Sustainably Initiative could see up to £1 million spent on projects in the city over the next 5 years.

Communities will be expected to introduce a range of different sustainable activities such as reducing waste, identifying alternative energy sources, accessing and growing local fresh foods or improving energy efficiency for individuals and in community buildings.

Other activities that could be encompassed by these partnership initiatives include supporting communities at risk of flooding or other extreme weather events, recycling and reuse schemes such as the refurbishment of furniture for people in need and educating those suffering from fuel poverty on how to use energy more efficiently and how to keep their homes well insulated, reducing their fuel costs.

Exeter CVS has produced a briefing sheet about the fund for interested organisations which you can view here Communities Living Sustainably Initiative Briefing [Word 214KB] , and we will be holding initial meetings for potential partners on Wednesday 11th January 2012 – one from 2pm to 5pm, and a later one from 6pm to 9pm. Both will be held on The Hub on the Green, Cathedral Close, Exeter, EX1 1EZ.
