Improve disappointing photos, create composite images, and design your own digital artwork in a hands-on session of guided experimentation.

 This hands-on session of demonstrations and guided experimentation will introduce you to the potential of this popular and powerful software package.

Covering:

  • Understanding Adobe Photoshop
  • Photoshop for improving photographs
  • Photoshop for manipulation and montage
  • Photoshop for art and design 

By the end of the session you will have rewritten history and made your own pop-art, and be familiar enough with the software to teach yourself advanced techniques in future, through experimentation and free online tutorials.

Basic IT competence is necessary (ie understanding the use of mouse and keyboard, and familiar with using Windows, icons, menus and pointers.)

1: Understanding Adobe Photoshop

- Getting familiar with the tools available.
- Understanding the 'layers' system for isolating images and making collages.
- Understanding image modes and compression techniques for different purposes

Exercise: Sandbox – using the main Photoshop tools to make a big mess!

2: Photoshop for improving photographs

- Retouching, airbrushing and cloning to remove blemishes and emphasise good features
- Colour correction and light adjustments
- Cropping, levelling and reframing images

Exercise: Wonky Weddings and Holidays from Hell – Improving disappointing photographs.

3: Photoshop for manipulation and montage

- Using 'layers' for collages and composite images
- Isolating a subject from its background
- Introduction to masking and transparency

Exercise: Rewriting History – Manipulating shadows and light to make convincing composite images of things that never happened!

4: Photoshop for art and design

- Creation of graphic objects and backgrounds for desktop publishing and web design
- Artistic text with reflections and 3D effects
- Using filters, effects and reflections to create digital art from photos

Exercise: Five Minutes of Fame – Designing a music poster with pop-art effects and artistic text.
